The Verve Definitive Series:
Blue Note Records and The Verve Music Group have joined together
to launch The Definitive Series, which honors the classic artists of
jazz with collections that span the archives of both label groups. This
is the first time in history that the two labels have worked together
on a project of this nature, pooling their archives to create complete

The Definitive Series represents the true highlights of such wide-ranging
artists as Chet Baker, Nat “King” Cole, Stan Getz, and Sarah
Vaughan.

Lalo
Schifrin Schifrin is perhaps best known
for his amazing television and film soundtrack music, but his compositions
and arrangements have had a profound influence on jazz and popular
music. |
|
Jimmy
Smith Before Jimmy Smith came along,
the organ was considered a corny instrument suitable for roller
rinks and baseball games. Playing bass lines with the pedals, sharp
left-handed chordal attacks and super-funked up right hand solos,
Smith laid the groundwork for folks like John Medeski. |
|
Astrud
Gilberto There's a great deal more to
Astrud than "The Girl From Ipanema"! She continues to
record great music right up to this day and is an advocate for animals.
This collection offers a great introduction to her music, both in
the bossa nova style, and other pop styles. |
|
Rahsaan
Roland Kirk Kirk was an amazing musician
who could actually play three saxophones at once and make it sound
like the best horn section you ever heard. But he was much more
than a sideshow--he was a living history of African American music,
from spirituals and New Orleans funeral marches to the soul music
of the 1960s and '70s. |
