Telarc
Interplay,
a five disc set of
John Coltrane’s recordings
as a sideman while recording for Prestige Records
between 1956 and 1958, is an excellent companion piece
to last year’s 6 CD set Fearless Leader.
Coltrane is heard here along with stellar sax
players that include Frank Wess, Zoot Sims,
Al Cohn, Paul Quinchette, Hank Mobley (all
tenor players) as well as baritone sax greats Cecil
Payne and Pepper Adams.
Milestones
Profiles Series: In celebration of Milestone’s
40th anniversary this year, Concord has issued these
Milestones Profiles, each containing a bonus disk
that includes an extra track by each featured artist
as well additional tracks by artists like Flora Purim,
Jim Hall, Ron Carter, and Hank Crawford. Each disc
is remastered and sells for $11.98.
Prestige
Rudy Van Gelder (RVG) Editions:This
is where you'll find discussion of remastered RVG
editions of releases from Prestige Records' storied
past. Sometimes there are straight ahead reviews,
other times consideration of a particular artist whose
catalog includes RVG releases. Explore the world of
truly classic jazz through these new editions of some
old friends.
Prestige
Profiles Series: Concord has recently
reissued ten volumes of Prestige’s “Best
of “ series from several years ago, adding to
each release a “Prestige Profiles Collector’s
Edition” featuring artists who either play the
same instrument as the artist featured on the Profile
disc or whose music is stylistically similar to the
featured artist. Each bonus disc contains around 45
minutes of music in addition to the hour or so on
the main Profile disc.
Keepnews
Collection: Concord Records, who bought
Fantasy and all its extensive jazz catalogs, has unveiled
the Keepnews Collection, a series of reissues of Keepnews-produced
recordings from both Riverside and Milestone. While
many of these are classic sessions that have never
been out of print since their release (Everybody
Digs Bill Evans, Live In San Francisco),
others are less well-known gems that deserve to be
heard by a wider audience.
