JOHN ELLIS
Celebrates The Release Of
ONE FOOT IN THE SWAMP
With A Weekend In CHICAGO
Friday, April 1st & Saturday, April 2nd @ THE GREEN
MILL
WHO:
HYENA Recording Artist, JOHN ELLIS (and his quintet)
WHAT:
John Ellis is one of the most exciting young tenor saxophonists
in jazz today. While he's best known for his work as a key
member of the Charlie Hunter Trio, he’s also quickly
becoming a compelling leader in his own right. Having been
signed late last year to the eclectic New York City independent
record label HYENA, he's just released his new album, One
Foot In The Swamp. Joined on the recording by the likes
of Nicholas Payton, John Scofield, Gregoire Maret and Jason
Marsalis, One Foot In The Swamp is a modern jazz gem, that
deftly traverses numerous moods and textures. Ellis accomplishes
this by playing with command and conviction that displays
an intriguing jazz vision in his compositions. John will
celebrate the release of One Foot In The Swamp with a weekend
of music in Chicago on Friday, April 1st and Saturday, April
2nd at The Green Mill.
John Ellis currently calls New York City home,
but he's actually a country boy at heart, born and raised
the son of a preacher in rural North Carolina. His second
home is New Orleans, where he lived for three years soaking
up the city's musical heritage, while building an acclaimed
reputation locally. These varied experiences are all reflected
in Ellis' music, encompassing the urgent, edgy post-bop
spirit of players like Charles Lloyd and John Handy, while
maintaining an earthy, pastoral underbelly that's as confident
as the rooster's early morning crow. Tying it all together
is plenty of Big Easy grit and grease to keep everybody
loose and feeling good.
