The Chicago Luzern Exchange is three parts Chicago, one part
Luzern.
Cornetist Josh Berman, saxophonist Keefe Jackson, and drummer
Frank Rosaly
are all young veterans (aged 27-32) of Chicago's northside
improvised music
scene. Tubist Marc Unternährer (30) hails from Luzern,
Switzerland. The
group formed in 2002 as Unternährer resided in Chicago
for five months as
part of Luzern's and Chicago's "sister cities" program.
Since then the
group has performed a handful of times, most notably Chicago's
2004 Empty
Bottle Jazz Festival (trio) and the University of Chicago's
Renaissance
Society.
"Several Lights'" nineteen pieces were collectively
and freely
improvised--created without pre-determined composition or
harmonic
structure. Player's strengths were established and thoroughly
embellished
upon throughout the album, sparking ideas and directions that
are
challenging and rewarding.
Each band member has honed their chops with an impressive
selection of
musicians as they've toured the US., Canada and Europe. Marc
Unternahrer
has played with many notable improvisers and composers including
Guillermo
Gregorio, John Wolf Brenann and Hans Kennell. Keefe Jackson,
Josh Berman
and Frank Rosaly have played with many of the great improvisers
from Chicago
and abroad including Jim Baker, Ab Baars, Anthony Coleman,
Fred
Lonberg-Holm, Jeff Parker, Rob Mazurek, Wilbert De Joode,
Robert Barry. In
2003 Berman and Rosaly performed at the Chicago Jazz Festival
as a part of
Ken Vandermark's Crisis Ensemble.
