Tom
Harrell | Roman Nights
Light On was an excellent album of Harrell’s
compositions played by a sympathetic group of musicians who
formed Harrell’s working band. That was followed with
a second album, Prana Dance, also of high quality,
and now comes the third installment, Roman Holiday.
These three recordings go a long way toward stating the case
for Harrell as a major jazz artist deserving of much wider recognition.

Tomasz
Stanko Quintet | Dark Eyes
Veteran Polish trumpet player Tomasz Stanko has a well-deserved
reputation for finding and nurturing good young talent. Like
his previous band, this one has the talent to push their leader
and mentor into new territory as well. Unlike that group, this
one is Nordic |

Mindi
Abair | In Hi-Fi Stereo
In Hi-Fi Stereo puts the emphasis strongly
back on Abair’s alto work and while there are vocal numbers,
they mostly feature other singers. In Hi-Fi Stereo
is meant to evoke a more hard-edged, soulful, funk-spiced sound
favored by Abair influences such as Cannonball Adderley and
David Sanborn. |

David
Benoit | Earthglow
There’s a difference between relaxing music and bland
music, and Benoit succeeds in being relaxed yet engaged on Earthglow.
Benoit’s writing here reaches a new level of melodic beauty
and he uses the technological elements to create a serene setting
that nestles his piano playing in a pocket of gorgeous sound.

Dave Liebman
& Richie Beirach | Forgotten Fantasies
Liebman and Bierach were to be frequent collaborators
for the rest of their careers. Sadly, many of their duo albums
have been long out of print and never made available digitally.
The same is true of a great deal of Beirich’s catalog,
particularly some excellent albums he recorded for ECM. One
excellent but long unavailable album by Liebman and Bierach
is Forgotten Fantasies. Recorded on November 18,
19 & 20, 1975 it was released on A&M’s Horizon
imprint. |
