JOE HENDERSON TO BE HONORED AT ST. PETER'S
CHURCH ON OCTOBER 22
Late saxophone legend's life and music will be celebrated
in a song-filled tribute
|
The late saxophonist Joe Henderson will be honored at "A
Celebration of the Life and Music of Joe Henderson" at St.
Peter's Church in New York City on Monday, October 22nd, 2001
at 7:30pm. St. Peter's Church is located at 619 Lexington Avenue
at 54th Street.
The event will feature performances by a number of jazz musicians,
including Kenny Barron, Gary Bartz, Al Foster, Charlie Haden,
Jimmy Heath,
Joe Lovano, Nicholas Payton, John Scofield, and many others.
Remarks and
remembrances from people who worked with Henderson during his
long career
will also be shared.
Born in Ohio, Joe Henderson's innovative style led to recordings
and
performances with such artists as Kenny Dorham, Horace Silver,
Freddie
Hubbard, Miles Davis, and Herbie Hancock, in addition to his
work leading
his own group. A performer for over three decades, Henderson
recorded more
than 20 albums for labels such as Blue Note, Milestone, and
Verve, where he
recorded the acclaimed, GRAMMY®-winning albums Lush Life-The
Music of Billy
Strayhorn and So Near, So Far (Musings for Miles), among others.
The
four-time GRAMMY® Award winner passed away in June.
"A Celebration of the Life and Music of Joe Henderson"
will be free and
open to the public.
